What are NiMH batteries?

NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) batteries are a type of rechargeable battery that can be used as a replacement to normal alkaline batteries due to their similar power discharge and increased capacity. NiMH batteries are made from less toxic materials than NiCAD batteries, have a higher energy density, and are less prone to leaking compared to traditional alkaline batteries.

When are NiMH batteries used?

NiMH batteries are a cost effective way to have high capacity rechargeable batteries which can be substituted in for general alkaline batteries. Due to their rechargeable nature, they can be used multiple times before the life cycle runs out and needs disposal, reducing waste and cost from replacing alkaline batteries. NiMH batteries have higher capacity than alkaline and NiCAD batteries, and more capacity for the price than Lithium-Ion making them a great cost-effective alternative.

Considerations when choosing a safety trainer

Battery size - This is possibly the most important consideration when choosing NiMH batteries as you need to ensure the battery size is compatible with the device requirements.

Voltage - The voltage output from the battery is usually linked to the size, however it is an important consideration to ensure the correct device voltage requirements are met.

Pack quantity - The pack quantity is an important consideration to ensure that the value and cost requirements are met.

NiMH jargon buster

We want to make it easy for you when shopping for NiMH batteries, so here are some key terms that will help you understand the range and applications a little better

What does life cycle mean?

The lifecycle of a battery refers to the number of charges and discharges it is able withstand before losing performance or not being able to function any further. Although NiMH batteries have a shorter life cycle than other types of battery, this is offset by their higher capacity, allowing them to maintain and provide power for longer periods between charges.

FAQs

Are NiMH batteries better than lithium batteries?

Although lithium batteries tend to be better than NiMH batteries on the performance scale, NiMH offer other advantages when compared to lithium batteries. NiMH batteries tend to be much lower cost than lithium batteries, environmentally friendly, require less maintenance, and don't have the lithium transportation regulations applied.

Can you overcharge NiMH batteries?

Like most battery types, NiMH batteries can be susceptible to overcharging. This can cause a permanent loss of capacity and life cycle due to pressure and temperature build up which affects the internals of the battery. When charging NiMH batteries, it is advisable to use a smart battery charger which can reduce the charging speed once the battery has reached its maximum capacity.
