What are spray bottles?

Used in a wide range of applications including cosmetics, landscaping and automotive industries, spray bottles are also a popular form of delivery for cleaning and sanitising solutions. Many spray bottles feature a spray valve, which can adjust the type of spray output, which includes a normal spray, a lighter mist, or a jet of solution. Some variants also have a foaming nozzle which turns the solution to a foam as it leaves the nozzle.

All spray bottles require a pumping action to transfer the liquid from the bottle up the dipping tube and then out of the nozzle. The means of release can sometimes differ and can be a pressure release button or a trigger, and while the mechanisms differ slightly between manufacturers, the basic transference system from reservoir to nozzle remains the same.

Why buy spray bottles?

Spray bottles are convenient when diluting larger bottles of cleaning solution. They come in a wide array of colours to allow for colour-coded cleaning and are an inexpensive and reusable answer to product application.

Spray bottle types

Available in different sizes, spray bottles can be purchased in very small sizes, (as little as 0.22ml) up to large variants of 1.5L.

• Trigger spray bottles   -   This high-quality spray type dispenses high quantities of product and features an adjustable dispensing nozzle to achieve the type of application required. This can also feature a locking option to prevent drips and tampering

• Mini trigger pumps   -   These smaller spray bottles need less weight on the trigger mechanism to achieve a full spray. Some designs feature a locking clip on the neck of the sprayer to prevent accidental discharge

• Foamer bottles   -   These feature a top pumping mechanism to build pressure in the chamber and drive the liquid upwards towards the dispensing nozzle. Once full pressure has been achieved, a release button is pressed, and the liquid is pushed through a foaming nozzle which creates thick foam that will cling to heavily soiled surfaces

Considerations when choosing spray bottles

Application - for tasks that require smaller sprays of product, a mini trigger spray is ideal, while a job that needs larger sprays of product will benefit from a trigger spray. For cleaning tasks that must be coated in product and left to soak, a foamer bottle is a great choice.

Safety - when using cleaning chemicals, its important to prevent accidental spraying or dripping. For this purpose, a trigger spray is ideal for heavy-duty applications.

Eco-credentials - while all spray bottles are reusable, some include components made from non-plastic, and this mix of materials can't be recycled when the time comes. Try to choose a heavy-duty spray bottle for longevity, or a design made entirely of plastic for easy recyclability.

FAQs

How do spray bottles work?

The most common designs of spray bottles utilise a positive displacement pump, which using a pumping action encloses a fixed amount of fluid from the reservoir and transfers it up through the siphon tubing and forces it out of the spray nozzle.

### *What causes a spray bottle to stop working?*

If your spray bottle stops working, first check that the tubing is immersed in liquid. If this isn't the case and you're still able to pull the trigger without resistance, then the issue is a damaged piston seal. If you can't pull the trigger without meeting resistance, then the nozzle may have a blockage.

For a blocked nozzle, try removing the spray head from the bottle and soaking it in some warm, soapy water. After ten minutes, and while fully submerged, try pulling the trigger again to push the soapy water through the nozzle to remove the blockage.

For a broken piston seal, replacement spray heads are easy to come by, this is also the case if you're unable to remove the blockage from the nozzle.
